ODM leader Raila Odinga’s daughter Winnie Odinga has defended her father from accusations that he is stingy.
This comes barely a day after Deputy President William Ruto accused the former Prime Minister of being too stingy to an extent of not even giving church offerings.
But in a statement on Wednesday, December 15, Raila’s daughter defended her father, noting that, unlike the deputy president, Raila usually gives but in accordance to the scripture which says whatever your left hand gives, the right hand should not know.
Winnie termed Ruto’s donations to the church as a Public Relations (PR) stunt done to woo members of the public.
“Not all donations are PR stunts. Give with your heart or not at all. The world doesn’t have to know,” Winnie said.
On Tuesday, December 14, Ruto who was speaking to a delegation of political and religious leaders from Samburu and Kajiado at his official Karen residence, the deputy president said the ODM leader has been giving church fundraisers a wide berth.
Without mentioning names, Ruto faulted the opposition leader for not only being selfish but also stingy adding that Raila only cares about himself.
“Yule rafiki yetu, haji harambee ya kanisa, hakuji shule, hakuji ya kina mama na hata sadaka peke yake hatoi (Our friend who we are competing with never attends fundraisers for churches, schools and women groups. Even an offering in the church itself is a problem),” Ruto said.
Ruto, who has been on a money splashing spree in form of donations to churches, Boda Boda riders, youth, and women groups as he popularizes his bottom-up economic model further said Kenyans will not consider a presidential contender who does not stand with them at their hour of need.
