Nairobi governor Mike Sonko during his arrest earlier today
Earlier today, embattled Nairobi governor Mike Sonko was briefly arrested then released in the afternoon while holding a meeting with a section of Members of County Assembly ( MCA) at Office Park, 14 Riverside Drive.
The county boss arrest set several tongues wagging with former State House digital strategist Dennis Itumbi expressing his anger over the action. Itumbi revealed that Sonko was arrested because of the case he filed recently against Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i in which he sought to be allowed to prosecute him over the Ruaraka land scandal.
According to Itumbi, he claimed that the arrest was a political witchhunt meant to silence them.
” Arresting @MikeSonko my Key Witness in the Private Prosecution case against @FredMatiangi is NOTHING but intimidation. He was supposed to record a statement with my Public Interest Office at 3 pm. Release him,” he wrote.

This comes barely a week after Nairobi County Assembly MCAs signed a motion to oust the county Chief. Itumbi accused Matiang’i, who was at the time the Education CS, of willful failure to comply with the law on management of public funds during the compulsory acquisition of the Ruaraka land on which two schools sit.
However, on Friday, Anti-corruption court magistrate Douglas Ogoti dismissed Itumbi’s application saying that he failed to explain how he accessed the information or documents in his affidavits that he intended to use against Matiang’i.
