How will you react if you wake up one morning and your beautiful wife tells you she’s planning on getting herself a second husband? Some of you will dish out a thorough beating while others a bitter divorce.
Well, some married men in South Africa are going to hell as we speak. Women from one of the churches identified as Shembe Baptist Church are asking, NO! NO! NO! they are demanding legal rights to have two husbands.
A section of the female church members have already written to the South African judicial council asking for equal status as their male counterparts who are allowed to marry more than one wife.
According to the women, if a man can be allowed to take another wife why shouldn’t the same privilege be granted to married women?
One of the women said that allowing men to marry more than one wife while denying women to have more than one husband is nothing less than cultural oppression.
“We must be allowed to marry a second husband. If my husband is spending time with another wife, I must also have another man to go to,” she said.
Wellington Myeni, chairman of the council, confirmed that some women aired their grievances that the church marriage policy discriminated against them.
“We have no idea how to handle the matter. I will have to take it to the leadership,” said Myeni.
However, according to church spokesman Thokozani Mncwabe, senior women in the church have distanced themselves for the request, claiming those who want to marry more than one husband are not genuine church members.
“The church has always allowed a man to have more than one wife. Women join the church knowing very well that polygamy is allowed,” he said.
Addressing the same issue, advocate Sifiso Sithole claims the women stand a good chance of winning the case in court because everyone have equal rights. He also claims the fact that same sex marriage has been allowed in South Africa means women shouldn’t be barred from getting second husbands.
