A woman who was once denied treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for failing to pay Ksh 1950 medical fee has passed away.
Esther Wambui’s plight was brought to public attention following a viral video where she and her sister were turned away by the hospital for failing to raise the money to settle the medical bill.
The deceased was a cancer patient at the hospital, and award-winning investigative journalist John Allan Namu broke the heart-breaking news of her death through Twitter.
Namu wrote, “Esther, the lady standing silently in this video, passed away on the 15th of July this year. Her family has tried their best to raise money to have her body released to them for burial.”
The video above was taken back in April this year, and captures Gladys Mwihaki emotionally wailing outside Kenyatta National Hospital after her sister was denied medical services.
At the time, Mwihaki, a mother of three, said she couldn’t raise the little amount of money needed for her sister’s medical services, and only did day jobs of doing laundry for other people to raise just enough money to feed her children.
After the video went viral, well-wishers contributed money and Wambui was later admitted at the hospital.
Reports claim Wambui has left a hospital bill of Ksh 200,000 that her family is struggling to pay off.
