A man in Nyeri brought his wedding plans to a premature halt after the family of the girl he wanted to marry demanded an unreasonable amount of money.
According to the unverified source on Twitter, elders of the wife to be demanded that the gentleman cough out a whopping Ksh. 1,662,234 (We also have no idea why it was so specific) if he wanted to take the girl away.
To back their ridiculous demand, they claimed it was the equivalent of the amount to educate the girl who is a chef, which according to netizens, doesn’t make any sense.
One Amos Makokha claimed that anything above Ksh. 100,00 for dowry is daylight robbery.
Adding that the parents were simply exercising their duty when they took her school, therefore the gentleman shouldn’t be forced to part way with such a ridiculous amount.
Others were simply left wondering where the young lady had pursued her degree considering the figures quoted.
This is not the first time a Kenyan man has walked away from divorce negotiations due to hard-headed and outright greedy demands by elders.
In 2018, a man from Embu walked out of a ceremony to express his displeasure after he wads forced to pay multiple fines for breaking traditions and dowry “protocol” which totalled to about Ksh. 120,000.
When interviewed, Mr. Mbogo said he was doubted some of the traditions and how they were seriously treated, adding he felt extorted by the Wazee.
He left in a huff, vowing never to set foot in that home of his would-be-in-laws.
