Men in Swaziland, now called eSwatini, have been ordered by King Mswati III to marry at least two wives from June 2019 or risk being sent to jail.
King Mswati III has 15 wives and 25 children, and has enforced the law in order to ensure all women get husbands since there are more women in the country than men.
The country is known to have one of the highest percentage of virgins in Africa as the King himself selects a new wife every year and only virgins can contest to be selected.
In order to curb the problem of women failing to get husbands, and ending up as single mothers or living their entire lives without husbands, King Mswati III wants men to have more than one wife.

He warned that any man who opposes the decision will face a life sentence as from June 2019. The King’s father and predecessor has more than 70 wives and 150 children.
He promised that the government will pay for their marriage ceremonies as well as buy houses for the newlyweds.
The country has just over a million people, and approximately 63% of the entire population live below the national poverty line.
