The management of Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) led by CEO Nana Gecaga is on the spot for allegedly organizing an expensive foreign trip to receive an award.
Ms. Gecaga, who is President Kenyatta’s niece, allegedly took a team of KICC officials to Mauritius to receive an award and ended up spending Sh10 million, according to Daily Nation.
The 20-man delegation included board members Jane Adam, Lucy Macridis, Kavinya Mwendwa, Fatma Muses and Jackson Kinyanjui among others.
Parliament’s Public Investments Committee (PIC), which oversights KICC management, has called for investigations to establish whether there was value for money in the trip.
“The committee is seized of the matter and is liaising with the Auditor General to establish whether there was value for the money,” PIC Chairperson Abdulswamad Nassir said.
Ms. Gecaga spent a total of Sh776,500 including Sh277,800 in allowances, Sh398,700 on air ticket (business class) and Sh100,000 in entertainment allowance, Daily Nation reported.
Each KICC board member received Sh583,900 for the four days they spent in the West African country while members of staff got between Sh300,850 and Sh386,250 depending on their rank.
KICC, which is Kenya’s top conference center, had been nominated in two categories including Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre 2019 and Africa’s Leading Business Travel Destination 2019.
KICC was named Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference destination in the 26th Annual World Travel Award (WTA).
