The family of former Mt Elgon Member of Parliament (MP) John Serut has announced the death of the former legislator on the morning of February 16, 2022.
According to communication from the family, Mr Serut succumbed to cancer, which he had battled for a long time.
The former MP had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma which is a type of cancer that affects the plasma component in blood.
In 2021, the politician’s daughter Michelle asked Kenyans to contribute to help pay for his medical bill which was about KSh 20 million at the time.
In a statement posted on her social media pages, Michelle disclosed that her father was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January 2020 and had been in and out of hospital.
“We have had bills totaling to about 20 million since his diagnosis and have handled it as a family so far. We are now slightly stretched and therefore asking your help in catering for his bills hence this fundraiser,” reads an excerpt of her statement.
Michelle explained that the family needed slightly over KSh 5 million to cater for an insurance cover after exhausting the one that was in use.
“We pray you find it in your hearts to give whatever you can as we aim to raise 6,000,000 to cater for hospital bills and an insurance cover,” reads an excerpt of her statement.
