A resident of Malava in Kakamega county stripped naked after losing Ksh10,000 in a bullfighting bet on the morning of Monday, February 7.
Martin Mwanje 36, from Lukume village lost the bet after his bull flee the fighting scene – even before locking horns with its opponent – a giant bull from a neighboring village.
Mwanje is said to have placed a KSh 10,000 bet – with the opponent also placing an equal amount – bringing the total payout amount to KSh 20,000.
This meant that the winning bull would see its owner walk home with KSh 20,000, while the loser would go home empty handed.
The event which many consider a cultural engagement for the people of the region, attracted a mammoth crowd, most of them chanting at the two bulls as if to encourage them to lock horns.
However, Mwanje’s bull ‘threw in the towel’ after only a brief fight, breaking into one hell of running far away from the ring of people, with Mwanje in tow.
Mwanje who could not hide his disaffection, reportedly stripped naked as he mourned over the loss.
According to Mwanje he was pushed to do the unthinkable as he was sure his bull would win the duel.
“I was sure my bull would win the fight. We had agreed to contribute each 10,000 shillings where the winner would be awarded 20,000 shillings,” Mwanje told Mwananchi Reporter.
“I was shocked to see my bull being pushed to the ground by the other bull
“It was then that my bull ran away from the fight, embarrassing me in front of the spectators who laughed at me,” said a dejected Mwanje.
The incident shocked residents of Lukume village with many feeling sorry for Mwanje, others however showed him no sympathy, and taunted him following his loss.
Speaking about the incident, the area chief Mr. Malick Shanguy urged the residents to consider alternative ways to earn a living, rather than placing bets in bullfighting events.
