More details have emerged on Football Kenya Federation president Nick Mwendwa’s unimaginable looting in Kenya’s football.
Documentation from a local media station reveals distasteful splurge of public resources running up to millions of shillings of taxpayers’ money in travel and allowances. It is alleged that Mwendwa ferried dozens of his staff, including his personal assistant, to watch the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
The government paid FKF Sh244 million to prepare Harambee Stars for the continental football tournament which was staged in Egypt between June 21 and July 19.
The national team was in Egypt for 13 days and from the documents, Nick Mwendwa awarded himself the highest allowances, more than what senior government officials receive while on duty.
He awarded himself Sh 50,000, his deputy, Doris Petra, was paid Sh45,000 daily, FKF’s then chief executive Robert Muthomi received Sh35,000, while each of the eight National Executive Committee (NEC) members who traveled was rewarded with Sh40,000 and the lowest-paid federation member, named “support staff” received Sh 10,000 for every night spent in Cairo.
Accompanying them to Egypt were NEC members Chris Amimo, Joseph Andere, Muriithi Nabea and Tony Kweya, Nairobi East Branch Chairman Michael Ouma, Mwendwa’s personal assistant (PA) Sylvia Mumbua, Muthomi’s PA Juliet Nyambura, Frank Ogolla, the federation’s head of competitions, and finance director Christine Ojode.
The analysis of the report reveals several misrepresentations and inexplicable entries under which millions of money were expended. The report shows that FKF received KSh17,854,000 and spent KSh17,858,413 for a home match against Togo, which did not take place. Instead, the federation explains that the money was channeled towards preparing the U23 men’s national team for an Olympic qualifier.
“We were supposed to play Togo as part of our preparations, but they canceled at the last minute and we couldn’t find an alternative. We ended up using the money to prepare and cater for the junior national team’s travel and accommodation expenses as they faced Sudan at home and away in the Olympics qualifiers,” said FKF CEO Barry Otieno.
The report also reveals that the national team spent a staggering Sh106 million in a three-week residential training camp at the French Rugby Federation grounds in Marcoussis with Sh63 million spent in the three days they spent in Madrid?
This was spent on “travel and accommodation in France” (Sh51.3m), “Training Camp in France” (Sh42.5m), technical bench allowances (Sh3m), and purchase of kits (Sh8.7m).
In one of the documents, the FKF procurement committee, chaired by Otieno, awarded Kamga, a Cameroonian national the job/tender on November 9, 2018, citing that he was “relatively fair and competitive”. The CEO admitted that they single sourced him which is against government policy and procedure.
It is also established that from the Sh244 million given to FKF by the government, they spent Sh8.7 million of taxpayers’ money on the “purchase of kits” and Sh5,210,400 on air tickets to ferry the team from France to Cairo even though Caf had footed all local travel and accommodation bills for all teams for the duration of their stay in Cairo . By the time Harambee stars arrived in Egypt on June 19 for the tournament, Nick Mwendwa’s FKF had spent Sh211,867,928 with only Sh33,930,770 remaining for use at the month-long competition.
It is clear that Nick Mwendwa and his gang have conspired to destroy our football. Our football has been left to vultures to feed on since Nyamweya’s era.
Reports indicate that Mwendwa is building a palatial home on his farm in Kalii with money from his monumental theft of FKF funds.
