Siaya Senator James Orengo left a court in stitches on Friday after quoting a Bible verse while representing Keroche Breweries directors Tabitha Karanja and her husband.
In a bid to fault the sleuths from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Orengo quoted a verse in the Bible that portrays marriage as a sacrosanct union that no one should try to break.
“Your honour, the Bible says that what the Lord has put together let no man cast asunder. Yesterday that sin was committed. Mr Karanja was torn away from Mrs Karanja, ” he said erupting the courtroom into total laughter .
Orengo is representing Tabitha Karanja and her husband in his capacity as a senior counsel.
The two were arrested on Thursday by officers from the DCI over tax evasion charges.
They have strongly rejected the charges with Tabitha Karanja claiming that the charges against her are part of a witch hunt.
She has maintained that her company has met its tax obligations in full.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) claims that she owes the tax body Sh14.4 billion in tax.
Orengo mounted a passionate appeal for the couple to be granted reasonable bail terms for them to be together again.
