A 23-year-old man has committed suicide in Mwingi town, Kitui County after his motorbike was stolen.
Nicholas Nzau who was also a hawker hanged himself in what locals blamed on overwhelming stress following the theft of his motorbike.
His wife Ruth Mwikali had reportedly gone to work and left him with their four-month-old baby.
On her return, she found the house closed from inside and when she tried to reach Nicholas on phone, her calls went unanswered.
She searched for him in places where she thought he could be found but all was in vain.
It was then that she decided to break their house and found out that her husband had committed suicide while their child cried in bed.
“My husband’s motorbike was stolen a month ago and he has been very stressed since then,” Mwikali narrated.
According to reports by the wife, Nzau bought the bike at Ksh140,000 to help him hawk jua kali items and he could not get to terms with how he had lost it.
“I used to encourage him not to worry because I believed he would bounce back economically because he was a very hardworking man,” Mwikali said.
His brother, Francis Muthiani, also confirmed that the deceased had too much stress after the loss of his bike.
“We talked at around 12 noon on Monday and he told me he wanted to sleep as he had been experiencing lack of sleep at night. He promised to call back later in the evening only to be informed about his sudden death by his wife,” Francis said.
The incident has been reported at Mwingi Police station and the body of the deceased has since been moved by police to Mwingi Level IV hospital morgue
